Art

Curriculum Vision

 

Art and design aims to ensure that all students:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

During the course of their art lessons, students will be taught:

  • to use a range of techniques to record their observations in sketchbooks, journals and other media as a basis for exploring their ideas
  • to use a range of techniques and media, including painting
  • to increase their proficiency in the handling of different materials
  • to analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others, in order to strengthen the visual impact or applications of their work
  • about the history of art, craft, design and architecture, including periods, styles and major movements from ancient times up to the present day.

KS3

Year 7

Autumn Term

Basic skills taught in this term will enable students to develop control of materials, observing correctly and understanding of colour theory.

Spring Term

Students focus their study on the world around them, looking at the work of artists for inspiration for their personal work.

Summer Term

Focused around progressing skills further and challenging students in preparation for Year 8. Students will use a variety of materials and techniques and study the works of others for inspiration.

Year 8

Autumn Term

Students will continue to develop their application and use of a range of different materials and processes. This will include observational drawing from a range of sources and artist research.

Spring Term

Observational drawing. Looking at the works of others. Students will produce a body of work with a 3D focus.

Summer Term

Focused around progressing skills further and challenging students in preparation for Year 9. Students will use a variety of materials and techniques and study the works of others for inspiration.

Year 9

Autumn Term

Students will be encouraged to become more independent within their own work working from images which have been sourced by themselves. The focus will be to build on their knowledge, understanding and application of a range of different materials.

Spring Term

Printmaking and stenciling. Looking at the works of others. Final piece showing a culmination of all techniques used within project.

Summer Term: 3D Project

Students will develop their 3D skills using a variety of materials including cardboard and clay.

KS4

 

At Key Stage Four students follow either a GCSE or Vocational pathway in order to actively engage in the creative process of art, craft and design in order to develop as effective and independent learners.

GCSE

Year 10

Controlled Assessment: 60%

Unit Title: TBC

Students produce a portfolio of work developed from a personal/school determined project brief.  This will be completed in school, under assessment conditions.  Both preparation work and final piece/s have to be produced in 45 hours.

Year 11

Continuation of controlled assessment unit.

Unit Title: Decay

 

Examination: 40%

Examination paper issued to all students in January

Unit Title: Students have a choice of ten titles set by the exam board.

Students develop a personal response to one question, chosen from the exam paper.  Students are given up to 6 weeks preparation time to develop a body of work.  Students then sit a 10 hour exam (split over 2 says) to work on final piece. 

Vocational

Year 11

Unit Title: TBC

Students produce a portfolio of work that covers a broad range of themes and uses a wide range of materials and techniques.  They will have opportunities to use specialist equipment and gain insight into the working world.  They will work from design briefs that have a vocational element to them.  Students will complete a number of units, some mandatory and optional specialist units that will be determined by the department.  Students will complete sketchbooks and final pieces for each project. 

 

 

KS5

 

At Key Stage Five a Vocational Route is offered.

Students produce a number of projects throughout the course that covers a broad range of themes using a wide range of materials and techniques.  They will have opportunities to use specialist equipment and gain an insight into the working world.  They will work from design briefs that have a vocational element to them.  Students will complete a number of units, some mandatory and optional specialist units that will be determined by the department.  Specialist units can include; sculpture, printmaking, fashion based, photography, fine art.  They will develop skills learned previously and build on artist knowledge and understanding within the world of art. 


Vocational

Year 12 - Brief TBC

Certificate - made up of 1 mandatory unit and two optional units amounting to 30 credits over the course of the year.

Subsidiary Diploma - made up of 6 units studied over the course of a year, 4 mandatory units and 2 optional units

Students will compile a portfolio of evidence to support their briefs and this will be both internally and externally moderated.

 

Year 13 - Brief TBC

Diploma - made up of 12 units, 5 mandatory units and 7 optional units amounting to 120 credits over a two year period.

Extended Diploma - made up of 18 units studied over a two year period and consisting of 5 mandatory units and 13 optional units amounting to 180 credits in total. 

Students will compile a portfolio of evidence to support their brief and this will be both internally and externally moderated.
