Media Studies

Curriculum Vision

We live in the most media saturated society of all time, our students are no longer "digital immigrants" trying to learn the 'language' of the media as they navigate through it, they are now "digital natives"; they already 'talk' in the language of the modern media.  In one way or another media touches every area of our lives from politics to economics, it is not just a tool for mindless entertainment as many people assume.  It is this belief that is key to our Curriculum Vision; in order to thrive in the modern world our students must have an understanding of how the media works and the (media) literacy to decipher it.  Our vision is to provide that understand and (media) literacy through our curriculum choices at KS4 & KS5 and in the delivery of those curricula.  By the end of their time within the department students should have the media literacy skills to be able to; identify the codes, conventions and techniques used to construct a text, decipher and analyse the meanings of a text, understand the agenda of the producers, assess how different audience members would 'read' a text, apply codes, conventions and techniques to their own productions and be able to critically evaluate their own productions.
