Year 11 Boys Football

The Year 11 football team travelled to Lighthall School in Solihull for a last 16 game in the Birmingham Cup, the furthest they had got in their time at the Academy.

The team were eager to make a fast start against an imposing Lighthall side, and they did just that. A free kick was awarded around 20 yards out from the Lighthall goal after just two minutes, and Javad Hashemi stepped up to hit a Beckham-esque free kick into the top left hand corner of the goal, leaving the keeper with no chance. A great start. 0-1.

After the goal Lighthall began to work themselves into the game, winning a succession of corners before a well worked move down the NBA right saw a vicious cross whipped in. Abdou Faal in goal attempted to clear but was unable to make contact, the Lighthall striker being left unmarked to power a header into the back of the net. 1-1.

Things went from bad to worse for NBA, when another dangerous corner was floated onto the area. NBA's marking was non-existent, and the tallest player on the pitch was left with with a free header at the back post to make it 2-1.

NBA's heads seemed to drop for the remaining 15 minutes of the first half, which saw them concede a further three goals, all of which could have been avoided if the team had worked harder. 5-1.

After some stern words and a reality check from Coach Conibere, the team set out to win the second half. They again started fast, a foul on Josh Lewis in the area resulting in a penalty that was duly dispatched by Hashemi. 5-2. Further improvement was to follow as Hashemi this time was brought down in the area. Although the spot kick was saved, NBA were on hand to get to the rebound and set Hashemi up for his hat-trick goal. 5-3.

The pressure on Lighthall was beginning to tell, as NBA created more chances, striking the post, bar, and seeing numerous goal line clearances. Against the run of play Lighthall then put the game beyond NBA, Faal in goal unlucky after getting a hand to the shot. 6-3.

This did not deter NBA, as from kick off they again attacked Lighthall, Nazim Bashir converting form close range after an excellent NBA move. 6-4.

In the last few minutes fatigue set in, and as NBA threw everything forward, they were caught on the break, Lighthall scoring to make the final result 7-4.

A great 2nd half performance from the lads, winning it 3-2, but the damage was done in the first half. Lighthall certainly knew they had been in a game!!! If you see any of the squad please congratulate them on their efforts and attitude, particularly in the 2nd half.
